ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sally J. Doran

Hello! My name is Sally Doran and I am the author of Crossing the Southern Border: Was it Worth the Risk? I live and work in Central New York. This is my first novel and it is a fiction book.

A powerful novel that challenges what you think you know

Why do migrants matter? It is a problem that is more prevalent today than ever. If you were to ask most people today, they probably think they know at least why and where migrants cross the border into the US. They may have an idea—and I thought I did too.

Target Audience:

Target audience: YA+ Fans who appreciate an emotional survival story featuring brave and determined teens finding success will enjoy this book. Those on the fence about illegals will learn of the dangerous conditions migrants run from. Moms dealing with the difficulties of child separation, family conflicts, betrayal, and domestic abuse benefit from their courage. Those curious about coyote practices and cultural identity will find that this story offers empathy as it educates. Advocates for social justice and the pursuit of the American Dream, along with fans who participate in book clubs, can take a dive deep into the 10 themes and multitude of book club questions listed at the end.

What would you risk for a new beginning?

Based on a true story

Crossing the Southern Border is a poignant exploration of the migrant experience through the eyes of Sofía, a courageous teen from Guatemala fleeing domestic abuse and poverty. She honors her family’s wishes by accompanying her sister and baby niece on a treacherous journey to the US. The novel dives deep into the challenges and aspirations of undocumented migrants, the intriguing secrecy behind the smugglers’ operation, and the unforeseen cultural consequences. Authentic stories such as this highlight the social and economic inequalities of those who dare to risk so much to have not just a better future, but a better tomorrow.

The untold sacrifices of the undocumented

This timely narrative not only humanizes the often-misunderstood plight of migrants, but also invites readers to empathize with diverse cultural backgrounds and engage in critical discussions about immigration; it captures what it is like for brave migrants who dare to cross through countries that do not want them, often unwittingly finding themselves in worse conditions than those they left behind. It is an educational and empathetic resource that will bridge cultural divides and foster compassion in its readership.

Inspired by true events—

an untold immigrant story

I invite you to read this novel, reflect on its message, and join the conversation. Because stories like this need to be told.

Research shows:

-You are much safer with more rather than less immigration.

-The real national security & crime problems arise from keeping immigrants out.

-Immigrants who most successfully assimilate preserve rather than abandon their culture.

-Difficulties welcoming newcomers are psychological biases by politically motivated groups aiming to manipulate.

-Illegal immigration is largely of our own creation, preventing us from fully benefitting from immigrant.

The Truth About Immigration: Why Successful Societies Welcome Newcomers by Zeke Hernandez

"The bottom line: immigrants are net positive contributors to everything that makes society successful."

Immigration is BENEFICIAL!

Both highly educated immigrants and those with less education are essential for natives to upgrade their skills & get better jobs. Immigrants are actually CRITICAL for our economy to diversify and remain on the cutting edge.

Villains or Victims?

Villains or Victims?

Public conversations & stories paint immigrants either as villains (they pose a threat, the criminality, they steal our jobs, they will hurt us economically & culturally!) -or- victims (we're morally obligated to help them, they are only trying to help their families! They struggle heroically and are in need of our help.)

Both persuasive narratives miss the real truth and perpetuate the political arguments.

Evidence shows that without immigration, we would have a lack of ideas, talent motivation and investment. We need factual optimism rather than unfounded fear.

Compelling evidence shows that decisions based on unfounded fear will end up costing us and produce unintended national security risks and more border problems.
